This week we split into groups and each group is responsible for explaining to the class their respective piece of either module 43, 44 or 45. The chapter (14) deals with stress, how people cope with it (both + & -), hardiness, resiliency, 8 steps towards a more satisfying life, the relation between stress and addictions as well as stress and health issues...lots of stuff to cover in this chapter. That is why we are breaking into smaller pieces and spending the entire week on it. Grades will be based on group knowledge of their topic as well as quality of product. Presentations will be block this week. LB

This week (Nov. 2-6) we will be jigsawing whcih basically means we are breaking chapters 6 and 7 into different pieces and (in a group), students will explain the main points of their section to the rest of the class. Each group was asked to come up with their own 'test questions' with regard to their piece of the chapter. This will lead to discussions concerning both reading comprehension and assessments (how do we go from text item to test item). Groups will present during block this week and we finish on Friday. Our next test (on ch's 6 & 7) will be next week (block at the earliest). LB

Key Club

Many students inquired on whether they can be part of Key Club and volunteer to help in certain events but not register with the activities office and thus not have to pay the $100 registration/activities fee. I feel your pain but after discussing the issue with others the answer is no due to the following reasons:
1. Key Club is an internationally recognized organization that sets certain standards for both participation and behavior. Thus members need to be accountable to the goals, mission statement, and objectives of Key Club.
2. There are other clubs and organizations that can be utilized if the students' goal is to volunteer periodically at their own leisure.
3. Key Club is more involved, will take much more of a committment and is a recognized high school co-curricular activity that offers the opportunity to letter (see Key Club link on my website for lettering information).
4. Logistical, organizational and liability concerns also contributed to the decision.

Thus, Key Club members will need to register with the Activities Office. The fee this year is $100. Yes I know that is a lot and it did go up from $50 since last year. I have no control over that. If there is a student who sincerely wants to be in Key Club but cannot do so due to economic reasons, please see me and we'll try to work something out. Reminder...the district offers an activity fee cap (if you and/or siblings are out for other co-curriculars).

There will be a test on the US Constitution on 29-Oct-09. A quick and efficient way to review would be to look at the 'bookmarker' given to each student. If you were/are absent and did not get all the notes, many of them are posted online (US History notes). The Constitution is also found in your text and for those who have a few blanks on 'famous Supreme Court cases'...feel free to actually look them up online or in your text at home or in school. The test will cover:

3 branches of government and duties of each
Questions concerning checks and balances
Electoral College and how the president is really elected
Many questions on amendments and application to present day (when the US Supreme Court rules on the constitutionality of a law banning hand guns in Washington DC...the amendment being debated is ___?)
Compromises during the wrting of the Constitution
Why our first form of government (weaknesses + 1 good thing that came out of it)
Famous Supreme Court cases in history and their impact on the US

I anticipate the test will be around 50 points. LB

1. Actually read the assigned section/module vs. scanning or going straight to definitions. Application of knowledge (applying what you read) to everyday situations will make up a healthy percentage of every quiz/test.
2. Do well (ponder deeply) your responses to the journal and/or discussion questions. This is not really a class that a "get er' done" mentality works very good. THINK, PONDER, ARTICULATE.
3. Please bring colored (whatever you got) markers, pencils, etc. for our next block class.

Non-project students unit test

Monday will be the written portion (or essays). The take home essay is due on Monday. Anyone not turning in the take home essay on Monday will be required to write it in class. If you have the take home essay completed, you will get done with time to spare. You will have the rest of class to study for the non-essay portion of the test to be taken during block. Also, many of you have not yet turned in one or both of your last 2 assignments (ch. 24 chapter review & Darfur/Sudan video). You will need to turn it in ASAP.

History Day Project Regionals

The following info pertains to those competing on March 5th (regionals @ Augsburg):
1. Augsburg campus (directions are online) is easy to get to.
2. It goes from 4-9 p.m.
3. A school bus will leave at 3:15 from PRFC and return after everything is over (including awards).
4. Last year, we returned around 11:00.
5. Bring a water bottle and snacks. YOU ARE NOT TO LEAVE THE CAMPUS UNLESS CHAPERONED BY YOUR PARENT OR GUARDIAN! There can be no wondering around and since students will outnumber staff 20 or 30 to 1, we cannot possibly keep track of everybody's whereabouts so there is an inherant amount of trust that students will be responsible for both their project and their behavior.
6A. Try to get a ride if you possibly can. Especially if you have a large and/or fragile exhibit. School buses are not generally known for smoothness of ride or flexible seats that fold down.
6B. Lots of parents attend, personally I encourage all parents to attend. Be proud of your student's effort and feel free to volunteer to help as needed if you are in attendance.
7. If you arrive on the bus, you will need to go back on the bus unless you are picked up by a parent/guardian or have a note.
8. No one gets left behind. If you are waiting for a ride when the bus leaves, you ARE going on the bus. That is what cell phones are for. By the way, if you have a cell phone, please remember it (not that I would have to remind any of you to bring it).
9. Please bring something to read or something to do. There is a strong chance you will have some down time while waiting for the judges.
10. Once you are registered, if you have time before or once your project is done being judged, feel free to look at the other projects. There should be a schedule of times for documentaries and performances. Also, walk around and view the exhibits, they are very cool.

So....bottom line:
A. You will be excused from McCullough's or Bachman's history class all week to update your project if need be. If you think your project is as good as you can make it, practice articulating to the judges your analysis (be ready to answer "how or who did this individual inspire, influence or impact?", why they matter or "connect this person to present day" kinds of questions). Practice makes progress.

B. You will need to register when you get there. Registration fee is $8 per person. In the past, PRFC (ISD 112) paid for it but in case you haven't heard, ISD #112 is in the red so....students may have to pay $8 upon registering but at this point, I think the district will again pay for it. I will know before March 5th.

C. All projects have to be set up and all questions need to be answered by the project creators. Upon registration exhibits go in the gym. In the past, you got a number and you go to the table with your number on it (esay). You set up there. I know of no exhibit that requested a plug in/outlet. If your project is a documentary or website, I hope you can read a map. It is a college campus, meaning lots of buildings. Documentaries and probably websites (1st year for websites but I assume) will be in other buildings, floors and rooms. Get there, find your room, get organized and get ready. You need to be there at the designated time, exhibits need to be there when the judges come by.

D. Documentaries and websites...look at state (MN History Day 2009) and national (National History Day 2009) websites for all the rules and specifics (reminders of word limits, time limits, etc.)

E. Have fun and be proud of your work. You advanced for a reason. Look smart & talk smart!

Lastly, since I will also be at Augsburg on March 5th, I will not be conferencing that evening at PRFC. If you would like a conference, we can make arrangements for one before or after school. Thank you. Mr. B

Defending your project (History Day Project)

If you or someone in your group has me (or McCullough) 1st block, good chance you will need to defend your project 1st block on Tuesday. 1st, 3rd and 5th hours should plan on Tuesday defense...2nd and 4th (unless you are working with someone who has me 1st, 3rd or 5th hour) will LARGELY (meaning not 100% but most of you) have to defend their project on Wednesday. Performances will present on Wednesday. Order of defense per block will be:
1. Exhibits
2. Documentaries
3. Websites
4. Performances

All research papers/essays will be turned in, read, scored and forwarded to regional judges.

Tips for a happy, healthy and productive defense.
A. KNOW YOUR TOPIC, TURN IN ON TIME, INCLUDE TITLE PAGE, PROCESS PAPER & ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY.
B. Have a plan. Who picked the topic? Who did what? How did you go about collecting your sources? All these sources led you to conclude what? How did you answer your key question? Direction of thesis...?
C. Know ahead of time that quite often people within the same group receive different scores (knowledge of topic and who did what plays a big part of your final assessment).
D. Make eye contact
E. Reminder, Mr. B is not really fond of "ahh, I don't know".
F. Look sharp, look like you know what you are talking about. Dress for success...try not to look like you just crawled out from a bridge...even if you just did...try to look, act and talk smart!

Non-project people please read

Unit test essays
Choose one of the following:
1. Explain how some nations during this time period added to their empire by use of force and how these actions would often result in civil unrest, fierce nationalism and/or revolution. Cite three specific examples cited in chapter 28.
2. Explain how ideas brought on by the Age of Enlightenment would inspire different groups of people to rebel and seek self government. Cite three specific examples as cited in chapter 24.
3. Describe the causes and effects of industrialization AND compare different economic theories mentioned in section 4. Specifically, describe the theories of Adam Smith, David Ricardo, John Stuart Mill and Thomas Malthus and finish with comparing and contrasting capitalism, communism and socialism.

This needs to be a formal five paragraph essay in a typical standard format. This is due the first day of the unit test. Any student not turning in a take home essay will be required to write one out in class.

All essays need a minimum of 3 sources. You can use your text as 1 source.

History day projects and unit tests

History day projects need to defended Feb. 24th/25th during block. Before or after school may be possible for a few, particularly those doing documentaries (movies) or websites. The unit test (for non-project people only) will cover chapters 24-28 and will incorporate non-essay and essay questions. The text book is online (see directions on website) and will be quite useful for this particular test. The unit test will include notes and discussion covering the US Civil War. An objective sheet (to be used as a study tool or reminder) will be posted 1 week prior to unit test. The high school deans will be at PRFC for high school registration and right now it appears it will be in social studies classes on Feb. 26 and 27. Thus, the unit test will be given on Monday and Tuesday (2 part) the first week in March. -Mr. B

Update for both project and non-project people

Project people: Interview with an expert (typed or written in ink) + a/v source 'watch and take notes' is due this Thursday, Feb. 5th. For those groups who have a confirmed interview but cannot get it completed prior to that date may see a '0' on portal but will get their points once the interview is complete. Please let me know ahead of time. Everybody has had 2 months to think about this and prepare accordingly. Remember kids..."a lack of preparation on your part does not necessarily constitute an emergency on my part". Consider it tough love but sometimes we need to plan ahead and not procrastinate until the very last minute, therefore, do not expect pity or mercy when you ask for an extension. It may be granted but we need to have that chat prior to the due date. Do not forget the help hotlines and helpful websites (posted in my room) designed to benefit your project work.

Non-project people: You have your own a/v "watch and take notes" that will be due this Thursday as well. We will be covering ch. 24 next week so you can expect everything you have taken notes on, read and we discussed in class, concerning ch's 24 - 28 to be included on your unit test. Anticipate your unit test on Feb. 24/25 during block. It will be approximately 125 points. Essays will be in class and topics explained next week.

Fifteen sources, no more than 6 websites and at least 3 primary are needed by block next week. This week we started to establish our thesis'. Some were pretty good, others are a WIP (work in progress) but that is why it is called learning. Projects will be due 3 week of February. Orders for exhibit boards will be placed soon. Non-project people will be taking their unit test shortly after project due dates. It will be everything we have covered from the end of the Cold War up to that date (roughly ch's 25-28) + notes/discussions covered in class. LB

History day project packet is on my website and can be downloaded. The packet includes examples on annotated bibs, research paper, story boards and potentially good sources (websites). Much, much information can be obtained via 'MN History Day' and/or 'National Day History' (the latter especially for those who want to compete or doing a website). Hard copies (of packet) can be made upon request but it would be silly and wasteful to make one for everybody since it is downloadable/viewable and has examples of items that some groups will not need to know. Extra credit 2nd quarter

Due to popular demand, this blog is for those students wanting/needing to do an extra credit project for 2nd quarter. The criteria is quite basic.
Topic: Genocide.
Time Period: 1900- present
Choices: Armenian, Nanjing, Ukranian, Holocaust, Cambodian, Rwanda, Sudanese (Darfus), Congolese (Republic of Congo)
By using a display (cardboard or whatever) or an electronic presentation (movie, power point), explain the basics + the causes and effects of the form of genocide that you chose. There is no rubric nor do I create one for extra credit opportunities. Try to focus on people/items that we haven't heard of or focus on some long term effects that still impact lives today. Perhaps pick something more subiconic like the decision or the decision makers concerning the Final Solution. Do your research to make your presentation unique and interesting. "Wow, that was cool!" would be worth a maximum of close to one full grade but VERY FEW people will get the maximum. Still, something is better than nothing.
FYI. This information was given out in class during the 1st week of the quarter.

The first timeline was an estimate, this one will be pretty accurate but remember sometimes we need to modify and adapt (due dates) as the situation dictates. LB

Topics need to be narrowed down and 1 well written 'key question' needs to accompany it. Examples of good key questions can be found on the media center website. Go to databases and click on ABC-Clio. From there, click on analyze, pick any topic, click on it and presto! The key question (that which the student/students are trying to prove or disprove) appears at the top. Non-project people will need to bring their text to class every day. They will be covering chapters 25-28 more in depth than project people. All students will be required to take periodic quizzes based on the readings. Non-project people will need to take a chapter test after each chapter and the unit test when get to the end of ch. 28. They will also need to write out 3 current events weekly. Thus project people will not have scores for those type of items and non-project will not have scores relating to the project. If your student was supposed to turn something in and didn't, that would be posted as a '0' and not just left blank. Confused? Ask your student or call/email me. Thanks. LB

For those who informed me that they couldn't access the text online, all I know is that I followed the steps (as listed on my website) and it continues to work for me. Oh by the way, considered a text was issued to every student this year, "I couldn't access the text online" never was and never will be a credible excuse for not doing your assigned readings and/or homework. History Day projects

An electronic packet of history day info is currently on my website. Downloading may take awhile. Every student doing a project will get a packet but if they lose it, they are responsible to download and print off a new one. Jen McCullough and I will be setting up a Wiki page for commonly asked project questions. It will be invite only (only student email from project people will be allowed access to page) but should be able to answer the vast majority of questions concerning the project. Search 'MN History Day' and that site alone will answer most questions. Projects will be due in February. Students not choosing to do a project will have to take the unit test (ch. 25-28 + current events) around the same time the project is due. If a student is thinking about a project, have them made a short list of things/people they are really interested in and begin from there. LB

We kicked off our history day project discussions/lecture this week during block. The media center has MULTIPLE sources and hyperlinks to history day project sites. A person could easily google 'MN History Day' and get to sites that will answer 99.9% of all questions. Bottom line, students need to decide if they want to do a project, pick 5 potential topics and select 1 topic within 1 week. Project people will not have to take unit or chapters tests but will still need to take periodic quizzes.
The criteria is as follows:
A. 1300 AD -to student's birthday
B. Individual (+ or - influence/impact)
C. Non-American perspective or individual
D. Needs to be OK'ed by Bachman, McCullough or Martens
E. Group of 4 or less or individual
F. Website, exhibit board, play (live performance), research paper (individual only) or movie.
G. Due 2nd week in Feb.

Cold War Test

The Cold War test will be taken in 2 parts (1st 1/2 Thursday and 2nd 1/2 Friday). There are a few items on the objective sheet (study guide) that the students will be on their own to read, study and prepare for. Use the text! We cut short our review due to history day project info (librarians, media center specialists, tech people, rubrics, checklists, timelines, etc.). Bottom line, everyone was responsible to view and/or print out the study guide and it was highly recommended to look at the samle test questions. The last few items on the bottom of the study guide will be up to the student to read and understand on their own (Glasnost, Yeltsin, Pope John Paul, Lech Welesa, perastroika, Gorbachev). There will be a study session on both Thursday and Friday at 7:30 in my room. LB

History Day projects

We are working on a wiki page so students can access it and theoretically find answers to many commonly asked questions. A (rough estimate) timeline is found on my website. The official kick off will be 2/3 Dec. Any student who will or might be doing a movie presentation using movie maker will be getting a tutorial during block that week. Future demos from history day staff, local librarians and/or our own media center specialist will occur on those days. Much info can be found on MN History Day website. LB

Stalin bio essay

FYI. Our next assignment (to turn in) is a five paragraph essay on the life of Joseph Stalin. We are watching a bio on Stalin in class and will finish it on Thursday. We will then go thru a power point presentation on Stalin on Friday. Students are to read ch. 30 section 2 (pgs. 874-881) by Monday. Sources we use include: Biography video Stalin: Red Terror and their World History textbook. Students are encouraged to locate and use additional sources for their essay. Standard format applies to this essay and it will be due on Monday, 17-Nov-08. It will be worth 20 points. Students will need to cite all sources used in this essay at the end of it. Look up bibliography help sheet under the media center on PRFC's website or google MLA bib. IF THE INTERNET IS USED, I WILL WANT A GENERAL WEBSITE CITATION (see media center example) + LONG URL ADDRESS. Thus, if I have any questions, a quick cut and paste will take me right to that site. Cold War sample test

There is an sample test online but...
1. It was converted to a format that was downloadable and hence (notepad) it may have 'spacing issues'.
2. This IS NO WAY 100% of the test nor will that ever happen. This is an example only.
3. The essay will be the causes and effects of the Cold War. We will cover that in class and they will need to write it our off the top of their head on test day.

Extra creidt this quarter involves doinga presentation (display board or electronic) on an example of genocide from 1900 to present. This will tie in to the form of genocide suffered by the Ukrainians at the hands of Stalin.

We wrapped up unit 1 and we will begin our study on the Cold War this week. Expect to see an objective sheet (study guide) on my website under documents. We will test on the Cold War (which will include basics of government and economic systems) the first week in December. Look for history day info to be posted online as well. Persuasion/propaganda project

The persuasion (fallacies) project will be coming due Oct. 27th (Mon). The criteria is as follows:
1. 20 separate individual examples of persuasion
2. Cannot use the same fallacy more than 3 times
3. Cover page needed as well as citing where sources were obtained from (Time magazine Jan. ___, 2008, etc.)
4. Students need to:
A. EXPLAIN WHAT IS GOING ON in the cartoon, the issue in the article, who is running for what in the political flyer or brochure or the context of the ad

B. Identify the individual type of fallacy being used (sometimes, especially in political cartoons, more than one fallacy may apply...select a fallacy that you can defend/explain)

C. Explain why you think it is the fallacy that you listed (analyze and defend your reason for your stated fallcy ("I think this political cartoon is ad hominem because it is an obvious attack on _________ which makes them appear __________. "...etc.)

D. A good way at organizing these is dividing them up by fallacy. Superior work needs to include proper paragraph formation, spelling, grammar, etc.

START WATCHING THE NEWS AND SAVING YOUR PERSUASION EXAMPLES...(Start saving political cartoons, ads, brochures, letters to the editor, copy and paste political websites or ads on net...copy & paste political blogs...etc.)

120 pt. project (5 points per persuasion example, 1 for example, 1 for proper identification, 2 for analysis/defense and 1 for spelling, grammar, punc., etc. for each example and 20 for overall quality and professionalism of project...how much time and effort went into it?...organized?...displayed well? )
